The layout of your basement entrance stair has a lot to do with your particular house, lot and architectural preference.  Structurally all three can be easily designed and the engineering is usually straight forward. Please visit our Order page to place a request for your Basement Walkout or our Contact page for any questions, comments, or concerns. The Waddell Engineering Team looks forward to hearing from you!

PERPENDICULAR TO HOUSE WALL

Basement Entrance
Some benefits to the perpendicular to the house wall arrangement are:
  • Easily install a roof over the stair without having to connect to your house.
  • Allows more light to enter the basement
  • Really makes the basement entrance stand out and can be more architecturally pleasing.  A wide stair with a double door at the bottom looks amazing.
Some drawbacks are:
  • Extensions into yard may take away from usable yard space
  • More concrete is required because 2 longer walls are required
  • More guarding is required at the top of the walls.

"L" SHAPE AGAINST HOUSE WALL

STRAIGHT AGAINST HOUSE WALL

Basement Entrance
Both the "L" shaped and parallel to the house wall stair entrance are against the house.  They are almost the same except the "L" shaped stair follows a bump out in the existing house wall, please reference the photos above for a more in depth view.

The benefits to these arrangements are:
  • They take up less yard space
  • The entrance can be almost hidden against the house wall.
The drawbacks are:
  • Installing a roof will require connecting to the house.
  • Less light will enter the basement compared to the perpendicular stair
